STL: MTC-Not how it’s always been done
Hague Haswell and Vic Tesolin of Melbourne Tool Company join Ben to discuss what it's like to start a hand tool company from scratch.Sponsored by Melbourne Tool Company
Over three years of collaboration with woodworkers and designers, Melbourne-based woodworking retailer Timbecon has created a new brand of hand tools. A brand that takes inspiration from the past yet designs tools for today. A brand producing tools that are simple, accurate, and accessible to all people who are passionate about woodworking. A brand called Melbourne Tool Company.
Australian woodworkers work with some of the most challenging timbers in the world. They demand hand tools that perform on dense, figured Australian timbers as well as on European and American hardwoods. Melbourne Tool Company recognized their need and has designed a range of hand tools to meet this unique challenge.
- The tool’s performance is paramount. It should be made to high standards of quality, be relatively simple to set up, and it should make working with wood a pleasure.
- It should be intuitive to use. It should not distract you from the task at hand with unnecessary complexity.
- It should be accessible to all. Melbourne Tool Company tools are developed in Melbourne and manufactured in Asia to very specific, high standards to ensure that the value-for-money equation is good for all.

Router plane design looks like... https://paulsellers.com/2021/10/the-best-router-plane-is-born/
I’m tired of more PRC produced hand tools. When there are several domestic manufacturers why would I give my money to PRC addicted companies. Save a dollar at our children’s expense is nuts. It drives me crazy when FWW does tool reviews and presents a table of information and no column showing the country of origin, lol. I know every company uses assemblies that could come from PRC. But when they farm the whole manufacturing process to them they loose me. I would rather buy an old hand tool or a used machine if all new tools were made in PRC.
