Made You Look: Making linseed oil from scratch
This historically accurate process for making linseed oil from flax seeds is a great watch. For those of you diligently reading our blogs and those subscribed to our newsletter (which you can do here) you may have noticed a pattern over the past few weeks. Ben and I have decided to make themes for each week that will flow throughout our content on the blog and on social media, as well as in our newsletters. It’s just a little more curation for you to enjoy. That brings me to this week’s theme: finishing. Adam Godet’s thorough testing of hard wax oils inspired this Made You Look.
There is a wealth of information on finishing—so many personal preferences and opinions on what works best. Instead of trying to sift through all of the options, I decided to focus on one of the oldest finishes around: linseed oil. Have you ever wondered how it is made? Well, curiosity got the best of me, and after a little digging around, I found this video. I love the edit, which is calming, and I find the process really interesting. Joe Besch, who makes his own paint for his artist studio, has done extensive research on how linseed oil used to be made. It is incredibly tedious work, though, which makes me appreciate the ability to purchase a gallon easily.
