Made You Look: Vintage table saw restoration
For the price, a vintage table saw is tough to beat. It might need some elbow grease, but as you'll see in this video, it's worth it!Remember Barry Dima? He’s doing well and still building wonderful stuff.
Barry and I spent a good chunk of last night texting about table saws he’s been looking at buying. Money is a constraint, and the used options are limited where he lives. We both agree that a riving knife is a must, but there is one concession I would make. At the right price, a vintage Delta Unisaw with an Ark Shark Guard* is hard to beat.
Unisaws are widely available, but most of them at a good price need some work. The good thing is that there is not much to them—a motor, a couple of pulleys, an arbor, and some bearings. I rebuilt the bearings on my old Unisaw after buying it from Mike Pekovich. This video from Pop Wood is a great demonstration of the process and can most likely be applied to most vintage table saw rebuilds.
Also, friend of FWW Mike Farrington recently posted a video documenting his process. All of his videos are worth a watch as well!
*I get asked about the Ark Shark Guard a lot—really. Yes, I wholeheartedly recommend it. When I sold the Unisaw, I kept the Shark Guard to put on my brother’s saw. I wouldn’t let him use it until I installed it. I thought the irony of an accident happening while it was sitting uninstalled would be more than I could bear.
