STL320: What is “fine woodworking”?
Ben and Amanda chat with Vic about bandsaw accessories and what constitutes "fine furniture"John:
I recently moved into a bigger space and have room for a proper shop. My first big-kid tool is a 14-in. Laguna bandsaw, and for the foreseeable future, it’ll be a no–table saw shop.
So I’m curious how you all (and Vic in particular) accessorize your bandsaws. Is an outfeed table worth the trouble, or can I get away with a roller stand? Are there any must-have jigs to make up for my lack of a table saw?
Dave:
I have been woodworking for a number of years and am always my worst critic. What types of things do you consider when making a piece of furniture that you would consider fine or professional level? For example, should fine-furniture drawers have wood slides or undermount, dovetail or other visible joinery, solid wood or ply? And for the case, what about grain color and direction, reveal consistency and width, finish hardware placement and style choice? I recognize these are all subjective and broad questions, and there isn’t a perfect single answer. I am just hoping to gain some of your perspectives to consider when sitting down to design a project. I like many of the details but am not sure which of them are essential for fine furniture versus techniques that might be more about my woodworking journey.

Good podcast guys.
Vic was even using imperial dimensions for board thickness. 7/8", 3/4" and 5/8" LOL
I think the most important element that differentiates fine furniture is proportions. If they are off, no matter what the product being made, this will detract from any and all of other fine details you put in the build.
Ben, Why don't you visit Vic's barber?
