Made You Look: Building a Kerfing Plane
Woodworking ASMR: Nic Taylor makes a hand tool in his tiny timber-frame shop.Lately, I’ve been very interested in tool making and machining. As someone who uses mostly machines, I find it impressive to see people making quality tools by hand. I came across Nic Taylor’s channel in search of just that. Nic has a tiny timber-frame shop and an even tinier woodstove, and he uses only hand tools (with the exception of a drill) to make a beautiful kerfing plane. Branded as a kerfing plane by Tom Fidgen in the Unplugged Workshop, it’s also known as a rebate saw and creates a parallel kerf in a board to serve as a guide for resawing.
I love this style of video: no music or talking, only the sound of metal meeting wood. With an eye for detail in both his videography and craftsmanship, Nic has taken care to record every step. He also provides detailed plans if you’d like to make your own. Nic uses a kit from Bad Axe Tool Works, which is sold out at the moment, but you could easily use an old saw plate as a replacement.
