Made You Look: Drill-Press Mortises
Mike Farrington uses an endmill bit on the drill press to create accurate, repeatable mortises. We love when we have MYL submissions from our readers. Jacob commented on last week’s Made You Look video:
“I really enjoy this series! Here’s an unsolicited suggestion for a future post: Mike Farrington’s “Drill Press Mortising Made Easy” YouTube video. I know he’s been on the site, podcast and in the mag previously. Anyhow, it’s truly an invaluable technique that I have used with great success multiple times since learning it from his video.”
Mike says he prefers being able to look down at his workpieces so he can clearly see his marks and layout lines. Though it is a bit slower than other mortising alternatives, the easy setup and repeatability makes this a great alternative.
Made You Look are videos we’ve found on the web that we thought were worth sharing with our audience. Let us know if you find anything you think is worth a look in the comments below!

Nice technique and as always, Farringtonian commentary. Was wondering how you were going to deal with the naysayers screaming "Oh, oh, a drill press quill isn't designed for lateral pressure!" but no lateral pressure involved (and much cleaner than hogging out with a drill bit). I've used endmills in a router, going to have to try this too. Thank you.
I enjoyed it very much and yes a new technique for an old woodworker. I don't see the link for the end mills you use ?
Thank you
