In Germany, to work independently as a carpenter one must complete a mastery program in order to gain certification. The last part of Maxim Leonard’s certification was building this highboard/bar. The build is impressive, especially given his deadline and time constraints in a rented shop space, which has some of the most enviable tools I’ve seen, including the Alterndorf panel saw, with some of the newest safety technology. I’m rarely able to watch YouTube build videos all the way through, but this one was engaging and Maxim explained every step well. I really loved that he shared the critiques at the end. I think we all, as furniture makers, appreciate honest feedback. The fabricated brass base was impressive as well!

I do want to note that one of our biggest priorities at Fine Woodworking is safety. While I have seen people climb-cut on a shaper before, we do not recommend that operation, and we also reccomend keeping fingers safely way from any cutting tool at all times.
