A sunburst finish for bowls
Wood turner Michael Allison answers questions about his colorful trademark finish at the 2006 Fine Furnishings ShowBowl maker Michael Allison talks to Fine Woodworking managing editor Mark Schofield at the 2006 Fine Furnishings Show in Providence, R.I., about the techniques behind his graduated dye finish.
Allison, a former guitar refinisher, employs many of the same tools and techniques to finish his bowls that are used in the guitar industry. The result is a stunning sunburst of colors that accentuate the curves and scrollwork on his turned forms. Specifically, he uses an airbrush to apply Homestead brand TransTint dyes followed by a top coat that adds depth and dimension to the colors.
