Maloof Memories: Philip Moncrief
Following Sam's lead I was going to make a dining set with Windsor chairs, like some I had seen in Park City, Utah. A friend (Ed Smet) invited me to go to Sam Maloof’s house with him. Once I saw the great chairs and actually sat in one, I changed my plans immediately. I was able to visit Maloof twice in his house in Alta Loma. Seeing him work there was a highlight of my woodworking.
I have followed Maloof’s approach, often laying out my design on the floor of the garage with chalk and then replicating it in wood. I have built three Maloof-style rocking chairs, eight dining chairs, and a dining table with a glass top so you can see the great Maloof inspired table support design. He is one of the most interesting woodworkers I have ever encountered and has permanently changed my outlook on woodworking. I would never hold myself up to Maloof’s woodworking excellence, but my small attempt to follow his lead has made me and my family very happy.
