Four Squaring with Hand Tools
Preparing lumber the old fashioned wayAnthony Guidice requires his students to rip, crosscut, surface, and edge-joint boards by hand before he lets them use machines. Once your tools are sharp, you follow a series of steps to square up a board. A bowsaw is used for the crosscuts, two hand planes are used to surface both faces and joints one edge, and the final edge is cut with the bowsaw. If you’re ready to work up a sweat, try out this hands-on milling technique.
