Retiree Richard Ciupka wanted to build the ultimate workshop, but his dream was stymied by local planning rules. So, he found a compromise by burying the 800-square-foot shop underground. Get a tour of this incredible space and learn out about the harrowing effort to build it.

Constructing “the bunker” was a budget buster, but Ciupka is pleased with the results. The shop below the frost line stays warm, even in Canada’s cold winters, and the earth that surrounds it is a fantastic buffer for loud shop noises so Ciupka can work until 2 a.m. without worrying about the neighbors.
