Frederick C. Wilbur is an architectural woodcarver who specializes in decorative woodcarving for domestic, public, and ecclesiastical architecture from his shop in Lovingston, Virginia. All of Wilbur’s work is accomplished by hand using traditional gouges, hand planes, and other artisan carving tools.
Wilbur’s nearly 30-year career has many highlights. H was awarded the Architectural Woodwork Institute’s Award of Excellence in 2005. He has appeared on HGTV, and a videotaped demonstration is part of the permanent display of art-carved furniture at the Cincinnati Art Museum. He teaches and lectures on the business of woodcarving.
He is also the author of two books on the subject: Carving Classical Styles in Wood (The Guild of Master Craftsman Publications, 2004) and Carving Architectural Detail in Wood (The Guild of Master Craftsman Publications, 2000). He has also written several articles for Fine Woodworking; his first appeared in issue #15.
