Mark Koons was introduced to the Japanese woodworking tradition in 1966, when staffing an Army evacuation hospital in Japan for casualties of the Vietnam War. Later, he spent time as an ironworker in Wyoming, where he would finally heed his call to woodworking. Koons, who also teaches the craft, lives with his wife, Mary Ann, in Wheatland, Wyoming.
