When Rick Long was in his freshman year at the University of Maryland, an elective in woodworking led him to change his major from engineering to industrial arts—and reset the course of his life. He went on to teach middle school woodshop for 32 years outside Richmond, Va. Since retiring four years ago, he’s been spending even more time on the passionate hobby that threatens to engulf his house: collecting antique woodworking tools. He is the president of the Richmond Antique Tool Society, which has more than 125 members.
