Contributing editor Garrett Hack believes that living with beautiful handmade things should not be a luxury. “For me,” he says, “it’s a necessity.” It’s one that lets him feel the spirit of the maker “in a hand-knotted rug, a shapely mixing spoon, or the chisels and planes I use building my furniture.” He has been building custom furniture (and acquiring hand planes) since attending Boston University’s Program in Artisanry in the late 1970s and has been writing for Fine Woodworking regularly since 1993.
