Looking for a 1″ vertical belt sander that is belt driven (so pulleys can be changed to slow belt speed). Tried searching the Internet for tool manufacturers, even checked Grainer, and all 1″ belt sanders I was able to find have direct drive from the motor shaft. At 3450 RPM this is a much much faster belt speed than I want. The use will be to sharpen carving gouges and such. The professional wood carver down the street from me has an older Dayton (Grainger) model that was belt driven – he dramatically slowed the belt by changing one or both belt pulleys and now it works like a charm and won’t burn the steel, but it’s much faster than Tormek and the like. Thanks.

Don: Graingers would also have a motor speed control that could be used to slow the motor and maintain torque. Easy to wire but probably pricey. Duke

I don't know if you would be able to cobble this up to make it work or not:

Thanks for the speed control suggestion. I don't know that all types of motors work well with such controls and hope to avoid that approach. Regarding the latter, I emailed Lee Valley requesting motor bracket info so I can see what Grainger carries that might work. Thanks to both.
Don, I don't know if it is still available, but my Rockwell Delta 1" belt sander is belt driven by a 1/2 hp 3750 rpm motor. It has served me very well. It might be about 20 years old.

If you have a universal motor on the belt sander you can use a router type speed control.I do not know if these sanders have an induction or universal motor.
