I have a one care garage for a shop. My wife has insited on a wall to separate the wood dust from the shop and her car. It is now completely enclosed and is roughly 11′ wide by 22′ long. I have looked at many articles and books on the subject but I cannot figure the “perfect” solution for my tools to fit in the space and leave room to work. I have a Delta contractors saw in the middle of the shop, a workbench on the west end, a widow in the middle of the north end with only one 20 amp plug, the new wall with 6 new 20 amp plugs are on the south end, and the roll up garage door is on the east end.
I will be buying a bandsaw soon. My drill press, 13″ planer, and jet lathe are all benchtop sized.
Any suggestions from those that have a similar shop layout or from more experienced woodworkers???
thanks,
ds

Here's how Matthew Teague did it in a one car garage. Tom

ds,
Whatever you decide to do, don't let anyone, especially the wife, see the widow in the middle of the north end ! <:G>

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!

OK - I can't resist, I thought that was what the garage door is for. A car? In the garage? LOL
On the more serious side, it sounds like mobile bases are in order.

Thanks for the replies. I should have proof-read my entry better before submital. The widow has been replaced with a window :), and I failed to mention that it is a 3 car garage of which one is now a dedicated wood shop for me to putter around in.
I have a book that shows a sliding tool cabinet that extends over and around the window. It's design is from someone named David Beyl. I like the functionality of the piece and have started to design one that will fit on the north wall around my 4 foot square window.
thanks

Exactly the same as mine. I've a cabinet saw with a 56" Jointech sawtrain with a router on the left wing. I've a drill press, a 17" bandsaw, jointer, 7' workbench, 6' workbench, air compressor, dust collector, planer on a mobile stand I built, shop vac, oscillating sander, mortiser, and a belt sander in there. It takes a bit of clever planning, and a lot of drawers. You have to clean up after yourself as you work, but there is still a lot of room to get the job done.
My biggest problem is knocking down 4x8 sheets of ply. I usually chase the car out of the other side and break it down over there. I have also been challenged with some large pieces on my router table, too.
Living on a sailboat for awhile helped me to learn to be "space efficient".
