Serendipity strikes. Today I received my tax refund and Woodcraft is having their 10% off sale. Makes you want to go hmmmmmm.
I have been looking to buy a LN plane, but cannot decide on whether to buy the #1 or the #2. What would be the reasoning behind one or the other. I already have a Bedrock 603, several #4’s and some others including block planes.
I just do some furniture hacking for myself. Currently working on my bench like everybody else, but as soon as I get the top finished I will be making some Craftman style furniture.
So what are your uses for the smaller planes? One versus the other?
Thanks
Jay

Some people say the only use for a L-N #1 or #2 is to extract money from your wallet, but that opinion will open a firestorm of controversy.
I've heard people say that they use them on musical instruments, small cabinets, things like that,...
Good luck on your workbench - working on mine as well, today.
Hi,
I think they are beautiful pieces of sculpture but can't for the life of me think of a use for one. I'm in your boat fixing up my shop and making craftsman furniture ( who aint!) I'd go with a #7 or #8 unless you have a jointer already. But these do cost twice as much so....
I really can't imagine much you could do with the #1's or #2's except take advantage of the higher blade pitch in confined spaces. Block plane and scraper would do most of that though.
I'd really like to hear from someone who uses them so next time I have some dough burning in my pocket this could be the tool I "cant live without"

They are totally gorgeous. Too small for my hands to do bench plane-like stuff with, though.
My favorite L-N tool is that L-N 66 hand beader. Beautiful, bronze, gull-wing shaped. Fits it the hands easily. And it is fun to scrape beads on the edges of work pieces.
Jay,
What a dilemia! I've personally always wanted a #1. Don't know what for, but they look like they would be fun to play with. Have you looked at Patrick Leach's 601? I think http://www.supertool.com will show one. I guess if I had that decision to make, I'd find an old 55 to play with. They look like they had ought to provide many, many hours of entertainment. Mostly from the setup, but...

Thanks for the comments.
I really love my 603, and thought a smaller one might be of use. It looks like they are better used for projects smaller that the ones I am planning.
Don't get me wrong, that money is burning a big hole in my pocket and falling out along with a woodworking tool. That, and a new locking differential for my Jeep.
Maybe I'll buy that set of bench chisels...
