Does anyone use a phase converter? Have past up on a good deal on a 3ph 16″ jointer. Just would like to know the pros and cons and are they easy to install. I do most all electrical work myself. Thanks Art

Been using a rotory converter for about 12 years and it's the best "tool" I have purchased. It opens all sorts of oppertunities to obtain inexpensive three phase equipment. I purchased mine used from a local guy but they are easy to make. My converter will start a 7.5 hp and run 20 hp total.

There's a lot of variables but I've covered the gamut of three phase from home made rotary to static and inverters over 30 years. For simplicity in that application a heavy duty static for around $150 would be the way to go. You can make a static but it's a lot simpler to buy it. Slight loss of HP but the motor is usually over rated HP wise for a one man shop or hobby guy. You still wire it with a heavier wire just like it is single phase. Adding more machines and variable speed applications would allow for different methods. Go to http://www.phase-a-matic.com and read some technical stuff and do a search. Start with manufacturers tech data first as a lot of the forum stuff is off the mark and entirely wrong in some cases so learn to differentiate which is which. You should pop down to your local motor shop to get their take on it. When I was first exploring it I met electricians who scoffed at the idea and said it couldn't be done but met many old timers with cobbled up systems.
