I’m having a problem finding 12/4 cherry suitable for making cabriole legs for tables–actually need to end up with pieces 3″ x 3″ x 30″. I haven’t turned up anything from local hardwood lumber dealers and so far have been unsuccessful with internet lumber dealers. (Can’t believe I’m the only guy in America who wants to cut cabriole legs.) Have any of you located a good–and reasonably priced–source for this?
Thanks for your help.

Irion Lumber, Groff and Groff, Hearn Hardwood, and Good Hope Hardwoods are all places to check out.
Woody,
I am a average day woodworker who owns a woodmizer and my own kilns, (spoiled, I know) I don't really sell lumber just stock it for my own use, but I would be happy to look and see if I have any. I think I might. I cut walnut cabriole legs so I cut the log to yield 3x3 because I know how hard it is to find.
Just let me know,
Jeff
Jeff,I'd be very grateful if you could check and let me know. I see that you're in Indiana--perhaps you're close enough I could just run over and pick it up. If you like you can reply off list via e-mail.BobP.S. Keith, the figured wood sounds as though it would make beautiful cabriole legs. Unfortunately I didn't plan far enough ahead to allow for any drying time and am working under some time pressure to complete the Queen Anne side table in time for our oldest daughter's birthday.
Sending this to Woodmaster, but it is for all.I got ripped the first and only time I ordered 12/4 cherry for cabriolet legs so I sawed a bunch of 4" x 4" rough cherry and walnut its been air drying for probably 10 years. Now to the crux of my post, I don't think its illegal here, but others will advise. I have a 7.5 hp electric band mill for sale with 37' of track and capacity of 29" diameter logs.Email me privately if anybody is interested.pins (Virginia)Edited 1/18/2007 5:00 pm ET by pins

I like Jeff have a mill for my own use. I have a few hundred feet of 12/4 drying. It has a lot of block mottled figure in it.
The tree was so covered with vines, that I could not see how bowed the trunk was until I got it down. I cut it anyway, thinking I would plan my project with it to use the grown in curves. Not a bad thing to have in cabriole legs.
This is down to 15% MC air dry now. I might could part with enough for a table. Although you would need to band-saw on down to the rough blank, and set them aside for a while to dry on down before using them.
Aren't bandmills great. I have slabs and leg stock drying in my shed that I could never find at the local hardwood dealers. And, if they did have it, they'd want an arm and a leg for it. Just yesterday, I bandsawed a slab of cherry I've had drying for 5 years into leg stock for a table I'm building. It was 11 inches wide, and 5 1/2 inches thick, and 6 feet long, all riftsaw (big tree trunk).
My local hardwood dealer wants $12.75 per board foot for 12/4 cherry, and the stuff is 35% sapwood.

It's probably further than you want to drive but Armstrong Millworks in Highland, MI usually has both 12/4 and 16/4.
If you build it he will come.
The phone number for Armstrong is 248-887.1037. They are just east of US 23 on M59 (North of I-96) in eastern Michigan. They have a huge supply of wood. I will be going up there next week to get some 5/4 and 8/4 honduran mahogany.
The other place to check is L.L. Johnson in Cheboygan (Lansing) Michigan. Check their website.
L.L. Johnson's is in Charlotte, MI which is southwest of Lansing just off I-69. The drive from Indiana is not too far if you are close to I-69. Johnson's has 3" KD cherry about $9 for small amounts $6 for larger quantities. They have 3 & 4" walnut a little more for the walnut. I buy from Armstrong and Johnson's and they are both excellent dealers. You can view current prices online at (theworkbench.com) pdf file for price list.
You may get better quality by buying sequential 8/4 slices and gluing them back together.
