After 10 minutes of use, the motor gave out on my brand new Delta 31-120 12″ disc sander. I am now willing to spend approx. $90 extra for the Jet 708433 12″ benchtop disc sander. (It has gotten very good reviews by users.) Is there any other disc sander I should be considering? I don’t want a combo belt/disc sander.

Disc sanders are one of the dingle most valuaable toolin the shop. I is a BIG mistake to limit yourself to 12" however. Do a search for used industrial disc sanders that are larger thatn 12". On the new market, you will see an incredible jump in cost. Wat beyond my budget. Yet on the used market, you can pick up an industrial 24/7 model within your same budget. I can't tell you how many times a larger disc sander helps a woodworker. Mine is 20" Larger is available.
The only negative is....the machine are very heavy.

Have you contacted Delta? I'm sure they will replace the unit. I have a Grizzly 12" sander that works very well. If you use these machines often, consider upgrading to a 20" sander. You will pay a lot,but if this is a commercial shop it would be worth it. If for home, stay with a 12" unless you got plenty of cash.

I am bummed out on the Delta so I will be returning it for a refund. I have a number of Delta machines/products and am satified with all of them. This is the first time I have seen an inferior product. The 45 and 90 degree stops are maginal and I really wonder how the main base casting ever got by inspection. Then the motor goes out. Still searching, but am leaning toward the Jet.
The jet is a good machine, never used the jet but have friends that have it. They both like the machine,no problems. I got to call Delta tomorrow myself, switch on 4 year old drill press went this morning. I can't turn the #$%^ thing off ,have to pull the plug. If they want more than $10.00 for it I'll place a regular wall switch in the housing.
Good luck with the Jet

You should follow your "handle - OldSchool" and buy earlier models of Delta, Powermatic, etc. I picked up a vintage 60's Delta 12" disc sander for $200 - parts readily available, weighs a ton and great castings. Old iron is mature, well seasoned and well machined. And the lerger machines are fantastic if you find one at a good price.
I agree that some of the older equipment is hard to beat. I am still very satisfied with my Delta Unisaw, 20" drill press, 8" jointer, etc. These are used older pieces that I feel I paid a fair price. Just can't find a decent used bench 12" disc sander.
I am also used Delta 31-120 12" disc sander couple years ago. The main problem is that the disk itself was not flat. It was deeply cupped from edge to edge. The cup was so dangerous that the middle mounting washer stood happily with the disk surface leaving a bump outward within the sandpaper. The result's that there was no flat 12" surface. I think Wen is the best disc sanders from Delta.
