I just sold my Jet Jointer/planer. I was never happy with the fence but otherwise it was fine. I have a Jet 15in planer now.
I want to get a 12 inch jointer. I’m torn between the Laguna with the Shear-tec head and the Grizzly 0834. Both have 5HP motors. Laguna has less cutters but are angled slightly for the shearing cut.
Anyone have experience with either machine?

I wish! :)
I owned a grizzly jointer once. Once! For about a year. Wouldn't have another in my shop if you paid me to have it. Just one ww's opinion.

Care to explain why?
I've a Grizzly 8" jointer for almost 20 years, upgraded to helical head.
No, not a perfect machine, but I've never an issue in all that time.
Nor with my 20" Grizzly planer (which btw is the same planer as a Jet or Powermatic).
Can't say I'm happy with my Grizzly G0634XP 12" jointer/planer. Build quality is crude, paint chips off with the lightest impact, but most damning is the cut quality. Even with a helical carbide head I get tearout in most species of wood unless I take the lightest of cuts, more so with the planer than jointer which I understand is your primary concern. My steel knived Hitachi was much better in so many ways. Overall I find it highly unlikely I will ever buy another Grizzly machine. It was my first foray into Taiwanese/Chinese machinery not overseen by another western brand(Laguna) and probably my last.
I have the G0634z at work, its ok. I bought it only because it was 12" wide and would fit in the space I had for it.
The helical head is not even close to cut quality of the Byrd shelix head I have on my 8inch delta. Build quality on Grizzly tools is not great. You don't get something for nothing and the cost of Grizzly tools means they cut something. Choose wisely with Grizzly machines some are good, some are just plain bad. I have been fairly pleased with most of products I have from them. There is not much money for school shops so I have to get what fits in the budget. Good luck.

I have a Scorpion J/P from Canadian Woodworking with a "Stinger" helical cutterhead. I've been very happy with it. The specs are similar to other 3HP machines out there. I bought it because of the slightly smaller footprint and how my small shop lays out. My only quibble is that the "depth gauge" that spins up and down with the planer bed is unreliable.
