12” oliver jointer in need of service. NYC area
Hi all
The group shop I work out of has a fantastic old Oliver jointer, a 30’s model w/ 12” cutter. A few weeks ago it developed a bit of snipe. I adjusted the outfeed to be coplanar as I assumed the cause was likely that the back end of the outfeed bed was slightly high. The snipe is the length of the cutter head and about 1/16” deep. Got it fairly tuned, but now it seems the beds won’t stay put.
Rather than continuing tinkering I’m thinking its best if we fork over the dough to have someone with more experience come take a look. I’ve got some feelers out at Tools for Working Wood.
Can anyone recommend a local/semi local shop tech? We’re stumped.
Thanks for lookin!

Try Vintage Machinery. Org. Your looking for a guy,any machine refurbishing company is going to be expensive. In the New York area there has to be people who work on and restore old machinery.
Have you confirmed that the blades are all the same hight
above the arbor? If not, bring them all in line with the outfeed table.Make sure the screws holding the blades are tight.Check the play in the bearings holding the cutter head.If there is play the bearings need yo be changed. If they are babbet(sp?) bearings ,sometimes tightening them eliminates the play ,if that is the cause. When you adjusted the outfeed table did you check the screws were tightened
I am in Philadelphia now so i cant help.Tell Joel that Paul Starita sends best regards
Give Tri-State Machinery a call. I have not had the pleasure of working with George -- I'm just a bit too far out of his all area (New Hope, PA). But, following his insta and seeing the kinds of large machinery he services...rebuilding edgebanders, CNC spindles, sliding table saws, etc...I'm sure he can handle the old iron.
