If I were in that price range, I would opt for the Mini-Max...there is a good article in one of the fairly recent issues of FWW comparing the contenders. By the way, your heading the right way. I may be preaching to the choir, but here goes. A Jointer and Planer of equal width will allow you insure the flatness and squareness of your lumber which is the basis for all jthat follows. It's definitely the way to go.
