How do I duplicate the stain technique used in my 1920’s house? Greenish paint applied over stain and rubbed off to create green tint on softer grain. It is beautiful.

Coltflyer, of course you were not their in the 1920's. So this is just going to be a lot of guess work. Make your self up test panels and go for it. I don't think it was done like you describe. Painters and varnishers at the time had their own proprietaries and methods/skills to meet the customers wants. If you don't know a lot about coloring paints and stains with oils colors and dyes you will need to find out if you are going t0 duplicate.
