Should I get a Delta 2 stage 50-665, fiber can, and possibly stand extender-holder, or a Jet 1 stage 1200fs with a cantop 1st stage? I see the 665 for a good price relative to retail – 288+44 shipping vs 449. What would be the performance difference? The 1200fs is 364.

I recently went from a single stage 1HP Grizzly collector to a 2 stage by adding a garbage can separator. It is much more efficient, I don't fear damage to the collector blades from large objects and the garbage can collects enough waste that I don't have to empty the collector bag as often.
You did not say how you would use this collector, but is you intend to run a main pipe and the branch off to the machines I would suggest buying a unit that had at least 1200 cfm. It is a huge plus to place a can seperator just before the collector - it'll help save the collector prop from hitting larger debris and it'll also save in the number of times you'll have to pull the lower bag off to empty. I empty my lower bag about every sixth time. Look around for deals that will offer you additional items like extra hose, hoods, and even the seperator itself. Grizzly makes a good unit and it always rates high in all of the tests that I've read so far.
Good luck

Thanks guys. Dust collection is new to me, but I've concluded that the 1stages must be preceded by a seperator. I was planning on about 1100 cfm which is how I narrowed the list to the delta 2 stage and the Jet 1 stage. What would be the difference between these two assuming the 1stage had a separator? For $35 is the seperator as good as a two stage's separator? Is the inconvenience of a motor on the barrel significant (the stand would fix that)? Are the 1 stage versions new and more popular? My space is a crowded 14x20 basement area; does that say go with the more compact delta 665? I've heard it may still need a seperator or at least a large drum to keep the cyclone working, and not fill up the bag.
It will be a fixed pipe, overhead or under a cabinet along the wall or probably both.
Too many choices ...
Terry
I would suggest you look at the delta 850. I just got this one and it runs great. I think it will offer more performance than the 665 for less money.
The 50-850 1HP 660 CFM list $270. ? I think I'm more likely to get the 851 1.5 HP 1200 cfm list $395. The 851 completes directly with the Jet 1200FS. All are 1 stage and would have a additional seperator.
No the 50-850 is 1.5 hp 1200 cfm unit. The 851 is a 2hp unit 1500 cfm. I got the 850 at coastal tool for 279 but it looks like the price went up to 295 there, (http://www.coastaltool.com/). I don't think you can go wrong with either!
oh, by the way i just friction fit the PVC piping it fits real tight and offers a lot of flexability if you need to change things around.
Good luck!
Apparently the info at http://www.americanwoodworker.com/200111/2002_buyers_guide/dustcollector.html is bad.
I like the 850. It's a little better on paper than the jet 1200fs $299.
Check Grizzly - a 2 hp machine 1550 cfm @ $239.00 plus shipping
and they kick in a two stage can thingie
