I have a belt sander that uses the 1×42 sanding belts. I wonder if I can use it to sharpen carving gouges, lathe tools and kitchen knives. I bought the multi-pack of belts with a variety of grits, but the finest grit is 400, way too coarse for fine sharpening.
First, are fine grit (2000+) belts available?
Second, am I off base to think this will work?
Any other issues I need to consider?
Thanks for any help anyone can give.

I've used belt sanders as a grinder, but not to sharpen something like a carving tool or kitchen knife.
It can be great for grinding, but not all belts will hold up on tool steel. You want a belt made for that purpose.
A good source for all things abrasive is Klingspor.

Are you trying to avoid a hollow grind? Otherwise, a grinder works great.
