I’m currently in the market for a 20″ planer for a home shop, but it seems that new machines are months away from being in-stock. Looking for advice/ tips for finding used machines. I’ve been searching facebook and craiglists daily, but I haven’t had much success. Also been in touch with Atkins Machinery and other machinery suppliers. Are there any particular online auction for used machinery, that people have had found to be reliable or is it luck of the draw with finding the right equipment? Thanks in advance.

With the exception of a SawStop 36" table saw and a Dewalt planer, most of my machines are 'vintage'. I live in Ontario and we have something similar to Craigslist called Kijiji which is where I found a Poitras 8" jointer, a General 260 lathe, a Buffalo Canadian drill Press, a Delta 24" scroll saw, and a Beaver 3900 belt and disc sander. I'm also on the mailing lists for several online estate auctions where I found a large supply of hardwood in a barn. It does take time to get quality machines at fair prices but they always show up if you can wait. Some of the above needed some refurbishing but I enjoy that aspect almost as much as woodworking. I'm still looking for a Boice Crane spindle sander.
Wow, that's a lot of machine for a home shop. Are you married to the idea of having a 20"er?
Every now and again I see tools for sale on Youtube. Good luck in your pursuit.
Woodcraft in New Castle (Wilmington) Delaware has one (20" Powermatic) on the floor. Don't know where you are but the $ saved on tax (no sales tax in DE) can be put towards shipping. The store will not arrange shipping for you, but that's not a huge deal. They will forklift it onto whatever shipper you arrange.
That's awesome. Thank you! Will call them tomorrow. Appreciate it.
From time to time I look at the auction list on line and am tempted by some of those industrial machines and most are 3 phase.I have used rotary and static converters for years with great success and ran a used 20 inch joiner with a static for years.Currently I run a 12 inch jointer and a 24 inch band saw with a rotary converter.I use a static converter on my drill press that gives me variable speed.Having said that ,look on wood web for ideas and try,by all means,to visit the machine before purchase. Be patient.I purchased a 1895 all cast iron, including the doors,36 inch band saw for 75 dollars from the Xerox lab in Toronto.Originally belt driven,I converted it to a single phase motor, put on Carter rollers, added a used shaper feeder with a pneumatic holder, and went to work.I sawed more veneer for my friends at the Victoria BC Woodworkers guild than many mills.SEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND!!
I recall seeing a 20" planer for sale in the Atlanta area on Facebook Marketplace last week. I did a search for 20" planers and got a lot of hits in the Southeast. Try the search in your area.
BTW, there are some really incredible tools offered on this platform. Seems that some people have no idea of the value, or simply want to get rid of things.
There is a collection of 24 Stanley planes, unrestored, for $1200.
Another posting, a good laugh - I just saw a couple of Stanley WOOD planes marked "used, like new" ........ here's a photo.
Perhaps the implication is that the item pictured is used and will function as well as a new Stanley plane;)
