I’m finishing up our new kitchen…curly maple raised panel construction. The “homeowner” wants a matching door on the 24″ wide pantry opening. When I use standard interior door dimensions for the stiles and rails (4.5 – 5″) they look too wide for the 24″ width of the door. If I make the stiles much narrower, I can’t get a standard knob installed. Any recs on door knob/handles that will work with narrower stiles, or should I just go with the wide stiles and rails? I’m interested to hear what others have done with narrower doors like this. Any suggestions appreciated.

Measured my 24" 6-panel closet door.
The stiles have faces 4" wide (+1/2" radius to the panels).
They look nice.
George,
Thanks, for the quick measurement. It beats holding up two stiles and eyeballing. I guess I'll make 'em 4.5". That is about the minimum I can go and still get the knob centered in the stile.

Install a rail at the level of the door knob.If not, shallower latches and locks are available. I wouldn't build the door until I had them in my hands however.

One option used on boats using more narrow stiles and rails is an aux. piece sufficiently large to accomodate the door mechanism "molded" to the stile. It does not look out of place since it is demensionally designed to fit the door mechanism.

That would work. It could be also an interesting design element.
