Actually, with hand drills I go for quantity over quality. Have a drill for vix bits, a drill for counter sinks, a drill for the screw thread diameter. Most drills work fine except those with cheap keyless chucks which are worthless. For drilling into wood I am fond of the high speed models. Something that runs over 2000 RPM. Speeds up the process and doesn't seem to harm anything.
Do you need an excuse to pick up a magazine this week, TD? WWer's Journal did a review on corded drills this month. Might not give you personal insight, but they did a good job (10 different drills covering a wide spectrum of features and prices) with details on speeds, chucks, clutches, ergonomics and other good stuff. All we need is for someone here to ask about right-angle disc sanders and we'll know the editors at WJ are clairvoyant!

Jamie: Going to the store for a copy of the journal, hey you didn"t say what kind of drill you use or recomend?? comon play fair here lets hear your opinion..I have to dig out my copy of Tools of the trade mag they did a review of drills also..

I have a Makita, don't know which model, got it on sale and like it -- solid and powerful. I'm not so picky about drills at this point. However...looking at the review, I can see there are features out there that I would consider should I need to replace the Makita someday. Two that I would like to have are a clutch and a clamp-on side handle. The side handle evidently helps a great deal when you're in a situation where you might get hurt by the drill hitting and grabbing something. I love the clutch on my cordless drill.
The author really liked the Milwaukee drill, and I had to laugh at his introduction: "Milwaukee has a reputation for making tough, if uninspired, tools." [emph. added]. I guess the drill is an exception to the rule! American made too, hard to find these days.
Lemme know what you think about the drills in the article.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I use the dewalt DW100. It's an old warhorse that has been going strong for at least 10 years. It has been thrown into the back of the pickup truck more than once. VSR 0-2500 rpm, depending on how much you pull the trigger. Sometimes it has too much torque and snaps the heads off of deck screws. Good luck.
I second the DeWalt DW100, I have two. Powerful, durable, reliable. Like Tooldoc's mine are about 10 years old, don't know if they still sell the same drill or if its been "updated".
Mark
Pat,Ed & Mark: Thanks guys for your replys, I have looked at the Dewalts most now come with those cheesey keyless chucks, I want a good HD Jacobs type chuck.. IM looking at Porter-Cable & Hitachi.. they look HD & Manly..LOL..

My vote is for a milwaukee drill. I just ordered a new 1/2" magnum drill and should be getting it shortly. I want it for heavy work that I don't feel my cordless is up to, mainly drilling big holes in metal and wood. Milwaukee drills are probably the toughest out there and have lots of power (insert tim allen grunt here). I don't have a problem with dewalt, but from what I've heard they may not be around too much longer (think parts). Milwaukee has several 3/8" models, any of which you would be proud to own.
I got a Bosch 3/8, 5.5 amps drill at HD last weekend. They were on clearance for 70% off...I paid $29! Great drill, but the keyless chuck burns your fingers if you pull the trigger too fast, I learned that the hard way.
Andrew,Jamie,& Molten thanks for your posts..I have a Milwaukee magnum 1/2" hole Shooter & its one Tough drill but a tad too heavy for reg shop use, only use it for big holes in steel & wood.the Milwaukee 3/8" hole Shooters are tough to beat cause Milwaukee makes Damn tough tools that stand up to the test of time..we use nothing but milwaukee power tools at work & they really do take a beating.. I have to do a comparison field trip to the local tool storeto do atouchy, feely thingy, always like to see & touch what IM buying..hmm lots of good drills out on the market these days..guess i will do some research & narrow down the field alittle..
thanks for all your help.. ToolDoc
Doc
Milwaukee and Bosch on the 3/8". I prefer the Hitachi on the 1/2". The Milwaukee is good on that one too, but the Hitachi has a little more amp and a little more torque. Just a tad more, though. Just my opinion from using both. I would consider either a "keeper".. ha..ha..

First Lady of the Forest: at work this evening I had a visitor, a sales rep for Sears/Craftsman Industrial sales, I never knew that Sears had sales people going around peddlin there tools..any how it was a rather nice looking girl who did rather know her tools, she left a few catalogs & said she would stop by every month to see if the guys needed any tools plus she gave me a hand full of Craftsman pocket screwdrivers..I then thought of you guys on here & asked if anyone could get the catalog, she gave me the e-mail address to get a catalog
http://www.searsindustrialsears.com
I paged thru it lots of cool tools both Craftsman & other brands not found in there reg tool catalog..

Thanks Doc. Can never have too many catalogs!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Jamie: or toooo many tools either...Hey that tool sales girl kinda sorta reminded me of you, sassy, brassy& knew her tools plus she sure was Damn cute to boot.. not that would make me buy tools from her but sure am going to be LQQKING for her next month, sure hope she wears them there short skirts all the time LOL...
ToolDoc
Skirt, what's a skirt? Oh...those things! Too funny.
DRILLS: Have you read the article yet? What do you think? I thought the detachable cord was a novel idea. Why don't more of the corded drills have clutches? I want a clutch! If I can keep Nick away from the Makita, I shouldn't need another drill for awhile, LOL!
[skirts: Can't believe I once had the legs, and the nerve, to wear a skirt only slightly longer than my bathing suit! Those were the daze, uhhhh...days.]forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
First Lady of the Forest: Yes I read the article after gawking at my new little shaply Sears friend <G>.. I have to agree with the author the Milwaukees are dang good drills & your going to be hard pressed to find a better drill than a Mikwaukee Hole Shooter..clutches=> your right on track with that more drill mfg should offer those in there drills, detachable cords=> hmm jurry still is out on that idea cause I had a Milwaukee with the Quick connect cord DAMN thing would disconnect itself.lol..unless they improved there design becarefull with that..Note I said I had one it got traded for a Non-Detachable one rather Quickly..
Now for the Good stuff => you said you had legs once..hmm IM quite perplexed on that one Where did they go??? me thinks your trying to pull one over on us here at knots because I happen to have inside info from a fellow knoter who swears that your Quite a LQQKER!! doesn"t surprise me cause all the Gals that I ever met who were cute Never thought they were hmm must be a Gal thingy huh??LOL...
ok now that I got that straightened out.. You have a Nice Day..

"Can't believe I had the nerve to wear a skirt slightly longer than a bathing suit. Those were the days....ughhh..."
Yes they were. When I got home from VN I had the opportunity to go to work for NCR. Instead I took a job for $100 a week driving a small truck delivering foreign car parts. Sitting up high in Atlanta traffic was lots of fun in the days of the "mini-skirt". I always chose the route with the most congested traffic. ha..ha..
The difference between me now and then is about 33 years and $35,000 difference in salary. And I chose the lest busiest surface streets. Still like the "mini-skirts".... < G >

I have a Black and Decker that my dad bought me when I went to college. It still drills just fine, although the cord has been replaced. It lacks some of the improvements made to electric drills through the years like variable speed, reverse, and keyless chucks. You won't find my model anymore - it's probably been out of production for about 35 years!
I have some old B&D drills 1/4" 3/8" & 1/2" that were my Dads there over 50 yrs old, plus they still run..
ToolDoc
A vote here for the Porter-Cable 2620 3/8" drill. It gets far more use than my other drills (Milwaukee 1/2" and Makita cordless). It has a metal keyed chuck and gear housing, easily replaceable brushes and has plenty of cajones in a reasonably lightweight, comfortable pistol grip package. imho, a really nice combination of power and weight. Might want to act soon 'cause I believe they're being replaced by newer models. About $100.
jc; thanks for your reply & yup the Porter Cable is right up there in running with the Milwaukee, not quite sure which one gets the nod for purchase yet, I have to price em with my tool suplier see who gives the best price..
ToolDoc
