I searched for info and didn’t find anything so here goes, forgive me if this has been address before.
I have an 4″ Delta jointer that obviously was designed for home/light use but even after following the tune-up from FWW 142 I wind up with severe tear-out. My plan has always been to use the tool to to get the 90 degree face and then follow with a pass or two from a #7 bench plane. I have to believe that there is a flaw in my setup. I have tried re-setting the blades to various outfeed table heights, thinking that the blade angle must have something to do with this problem. I have tried light cuts, slow feed rates, reversing board on the assumption that I am not reading the board grain correctly with no great success. I am afraid to pass a board over the cutter for fear of a 1/4″ chunk being torn out of an otherwise clean face. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated. Does anyone have the original user’s guide for this tool. (I don’t have the model number with me today but can get it)

Ken, the blades should be set to the outfeed table height. First make sure the infeed and outfeed tables are in a straight line. Place a straight edge over the tables and look for any light underneath. Both tables are set at the same height for this. If they are not in the same plane then you will have to adjust one or the other tables, sometimes both.I am not familiar with your planer but the manual should tell you how to do this. When tables are in the same plane, lower the infeed table. Loosen the jib screws and raise them slightly, do not tighten .Place a thick piece of glass ( I use a 4" x 12" x 1/4" plate glass from a jalousie window ) on the blade and press the knife down. Do the same for all knives. The glass goes on the outfeed table only. Check with a straight stick by placing stick on outfeed table with one inch of stick past the knives.Turn the cutterhead BY HAND, the stick should advance very slightly, maybe an 1/8".Do this on each side of the knife and on all knives. The stick should advance about the same amount on all knives.
You may be able to get a manual from Delta, they have a website
Thanks,
Ken
I have a Rockwell/Delta 4" Deluxe Jointer, model 37-290, which I bought new in about 1973, and I also have the original manual. Although too small to do a lot of things, for what I do use it for it works well. I don't have a scanner, or I'd email it to you, but if you go to http://files.oldwwmachines.com/PDF/Delta/1962-37-110.pdf , you can see the manual for the non-deluxe version (model 37-110, shorter bed, as I recall, if you can imagine that), circa 1962. There appears to be a lot of commonality between the manuals regarding illustrations and text, although some photos are different. Let me know if I can be of further assistance (assuming of course that I've already been of some assistance).
Be seeing you...

Thanks, much help. I am home now and I too have the 37-290. I can't imagine anything much smaller than this jointer! One of these days I will break down and buy a 6" (or 8" if I win the lottery!) Do you have the same problems I described? I can only assume that I have been setting the blades too high or too low in the cutterhead. It seems that the higher the outfeed table the closer to the cutterhead.
Thanks again,
Ken
I've had no such troubles with mine, and based on your description of trial and error, I couldn't even venture a guess. Did you try Delta for a manual? They've sent me manuals for old equipment of even earlier vintage at no charge, some original glossy, some photocopies, along with parts books when they were separate.Be seeing you...
