Hi all. Our shop is re-tooling and we have a question about a new table saw. We’re looking at a General 350R 10″ saw with a 3HP motor or a 5 HP, both machines made in Canada. Either saw would run on single phase.
It will be used heavily, cutting 6/4 to 12/4 hardwoods every day.
Our most experienced craftsman swears the 5HP will be better and never “bog down”.
The supplier claims the 3 HP will do just as well or better, since the 5 HP is better on 3 Phase and on single phase, the 3 HP will perform better.
Any thoughts? Unfortunately, I need to decide today.

For a 10" saw 3hp is plenty.
For a 10" saw 3hp is plenty. 5hp is pushing it for single phase not recommended.
Sounds as if you need a 12" 5hp 3ph machine though.
lots of views on this one
I'd go 3 phase 5hp. The reason I say that is two things you said. One, you are in a production shop, and it's primary use is cutting big stuff. Now don't get me wrong, a 3hp is nothing to sneeze at. I have a 3hp TS that cuts everything I shove at it but if I were a production shop running the heck out of it. I'd go 5hp no question. Now for 3 phase .vs. single, its a matter of heat and copper. There are all kinds of articles on 3 phase .vs. single in machinery. Again I go back to your word prodcution shop. I have 3 phase and if you can supply it do it. It spreads the load and if you are doing a lot of running it will keep the heat down. Don't get me wrong 5hp single phase will be fine but it will required a much larger circuit and heavier wire (by a lot). I'd definately go 5hp though. I'd bet the price point is not that much in the scope of things and if you need that exra torque it wil come in handy. I've never heard of someone going "oh man I bought too much tool".

5 HP or 3HP General Saw
Actually we have both single and 3 phase, but limited amps on the 3 phase, which will go to a paint booth with makeup air.
We are going to use the rest of the 3 phase either for a 20" jointer or dust collection system.
So the saw necessarily must be single phase. And I'm hoping that General wouldn't offer 5 HP on single phase if it were to be handicapped. Just want to be sure.
Another question has arisen - we COULD run the Casadei 20", 5 HP jointer on singe phase, but not sure if that would be wise.
