I know that this question has been asked, but I was all set to order a new PM 54A when a freiend told me about the Jet JJ-6CSX 6″ closed stand jointer. He pointed out the the Jet adjusts the bed with hand-wheels, it uses dovetails on the infeed and outfeed tables, etc.
Can anyone give me their experiences with these two jointers?
I’ve ruled out an 8″ jointer for two reasons: 1) cost. 2) I have never needed wider; I don;t buy boards that are twisted.
Thanks,
Mike

I have the Jet 6" closed stand jointer. I chose it over the Delta because of the hand wheel adjustment on infeed and outfeed table. There is a small amount of backlash on the wheels, but it still seems a lot more precise than the clunky delta levers. I suppose that precision is really only crucial on the outfeed table. I tend to set the infeed for 1/32" cut and never move it. So far, so good. The fit and finish are excellent, came with extra blades, cuts beautifully. As for the Powermatic, it looks very nice, and I suppose the longer bed is an advantage, but for the price (about $650?) you could get an 8" jointer. It would be nice to be able to face-joint something wider than 6", but like you said, that's not your typical stock, or mine. If you don't care about the extra bed length, go for the Jet. My two cents.
I agree with gsawn. I've had the Jet 6" jointer for about a year. No set up problems, no operational problems. Twice I've wished I had the 8", but I was able to work around it. If I had the room and the money I would trade up to the 8". Go for the Jet.
Ive had the Jet for about 3 mos all I can say is what took me so long to get it I love it. Ease of assy. quality ect it was almost ready to go out of the box after the assy. The only adj I had was the fence. That was a piece of cake also. Darkworksite4: When the job is to small for everyone else, Its just about right for me"
I have the PM54A. My old jointer was a Craftsman. This one is smooth as silk. It has plenty of power. The 66 inch bed is really nice when doing longer stock. I looked at the 8" jointers but didn't want to spend $1200 for the 8" Powermatic or Delta. Besides, I didn't have another 220 circuit.
