Has anyone used, with good results, some of the “cheap” six inch jointer knives found on Amazon? You know, the ones that run about $16 for a set of three. The place that I’ve sent my table saw blades, planer blades and jointer knives for the past several years charges about $4.15 per blade, plus shipping. I hate to be part of the “just throw it away” crowd, but the price might be too good to pass up.

I haven't tried the cheap blades for my jointer. I use a Deulen style Jointer Sharpening Jig and it does a good job.
For 16 bucks, buy a set and let us know how it goes.
Personally my philosophy is cheap blades = cheap results. If you're using a tool seriously invest in good blades, the only thing better than a good tool is good blades.
The blades that became nicked, from a small knot in a pine board, were "good" blades that cost $40. And the jointer was set up to only take a 16th" of an inch off at a slow feed rate.
