You should find a good deal of info by doing a search on this site or do a Google search on the internet. Although if it helps I personally own and use a Grizzly 8" long bed jointer and it has worked very well for the five or so years that I've had it. If you've ever owned a jointer then you already know that joiners are used for milling lumber to produce one straight side that is at ninety degrees to another straight side. They do not mill lumber that is parallel to the opposing side as they never mill off the same amount of wood evenly from both ends of the piece as you run through it. That's why it's necessary to have both a planer and a jointer.I own several other larger Grizzly machines and have been very satisfied with their performance and quality. You won't be disappointed.
Six inch jointers are great tools to buy used, and are fairly common on Craig's List and the like. It's not at all uncommon for folks to want to up grade to 8" jointers. And, if you yourself decide to upgrade down the road, you will get almost all of your purchase price back toward the wider jointer.
I own an 8" Grizz long bed jointer and can say that I have been very pleased with it. It came dead flat right out of the shipping case, with the knives as sharp as you want. (Do get an extra set, so you will have them ready for when the first gets dull and knicked).
I would suggest, if you can, looking at the 8" jointers. Grizzly has deals frequently that could bring them into your price range. The longer bed and wider capacity is a VERY good thing. Unless you are doing very small work, you will find yourself wanting it sooner or later.
Chris
Ditto Steve on looking for a used "6 which you can recover most of your money on re-sale. Unless you are just extremely cramped for space you will discover you want at least an 8" eventually. The bed on the 8" is not much shorter than the 6" long bed so the footprint difference is really in-significant in this case.
Thanks for the info Sarge. I'm still bouncing back and forth between getting a 6" or an 8". Most of the woodworking I do is for myself or family projects so I'm still not sure if buying an 8" will justify the extra cost
Hi Chris, if I may ask what model Grizzly do you have and how long have you had it.
Tommy.. the Grizzly 8" jointer 0586 is priced at the moment for $575 + $144 shipping or $719 to your door. Unless you can pick it up at one of the three showrooms to drop shipping but.. include state sales tax. I looked at the GI and Jet and the 6" is around the same cost.
The Grizzly 0586 8" is basically the same jointer as my Steel City 8" but my SC has a granite fence and double sided indexed knives so you just turn them over and replace back in the guide pins with no adjusting.
How good is the jointer with 2 HP.. Good enough to have run around 30,000 linear feet over it in around 4 years wihout a burp. I personally see no need for spriral knives and the lot as I don't do that much squirrel grain woods such as bird-eye or curly maple. With that said I just purchased a load of curly maple yesterday at $2.05 a board foot but I will skew my fence for a better cut which few would bother to do or even realize the fence will skew.
There are many 0586's out there working in home shops and you will rarely hear any negative comments. It is a dove-tail design and not parallegram but in 39 years I have never had one problem with beds getting knocked out of alignment. It is harder to adjust a dove-tail way than the parallelgram models but the only two times I have seen beds on DT way jointers mis-aligned was in a commercail setting where idiots used the jointer as benches to park their fat asses on break. ha.. ha...
Good luck with your quest...
If you're thinking about
If you're thinking about getting the Grizzly G0586 that Sarge mentioned you should do it sooner rather than later. Grizzly now shows them on the "Outlet" page which means they are on their way out.
Regards,
Ron
