Folks,
I am looking to buy a 6″ random orbit sander for work on stripper canoes and restoring old wooden boats. Any suggestions? I am leaning towards the porter cable or bosch. The bosch is slightly more expensive and has a more powerful motor, and has a design that I am not too crazy about. The porter cable has the old familiar grinder style body. Thanks for the help.

I have the Porter Cable 5 inch (variable speed). I don't know if it's valid to extrapolate from the 5 inch to the 6 inch model, but this is one of the best tools I have ever owned. It is almost tireless to use (it doesn't send vibrations into your hand), does an excellent job, picks up almost ALL the sanding dust without a vacuum hook-up. With a hook-up, it's virtually dust-free. And while it makes noise, it is not loud.

Hi Rich.
I have the P-C 6" and with some lack of experience with this style of sander, I find it is hard to hang on to, it wants to pull away from my intended sanding spot. Is there any advice you could give. It seems to do this even with the fine grit paper. More than likely a simple solution, getting used to the grinder style shape may be one of them? Over all it seems to be a nice tool, right up there with P-C's quality.
Thanks for the help Rich-All. Be good Rick...............
Rick,
Sorry. I have no experience with the 6 inch model. As I said, it may not be valid to use experiences with the 5 inch to relate to the 6 inch.
I don't have that problem at all with the 5 inch sander. Maybe the internal clutch is not working so that the random orbital action is not happening. The disk spins on a central axis AND moves in little orbits.
Hope that helps.

ditto on the P.C. variable speed had it when they first came out they say not to go from 5"-6" pads with out changing the counter weight, and i have. and the tool just orbits along never a problem. i'm sold P.C. for me. cheers bear
I have the 6" and I think it's a durable tool. You can make it into a polisher too.
it's the same body.
