6,000 year old oak tree found in Indiana
Interesting story about an oak tree that was dug up in a gravel pit in Indiana, the tree could be be anywhere from 6,000-30,000 years old. It’s at a mill being treated.

Mike, How much do you think that will go for$ a board ft. Love to get my hands on it.
Thanks for the article, Lou
300yr old (when downed), old growth oak! Imagine the tight grain on that thing.1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
What would be really special about anything made with this wood (I can imagine most of it will end up as veneer) is to touch a finished piece and imagine what the planet was like when that growth ring was being formed. Of course this isn't the first time that ancient logs have been dug up and run through a mill, the New Zealanders have been digging up the kauri logs from the peet bogs and in Indonesia there are salvage operations to recover trees buried in volcanic eruptions from long ago.
AH, yes, but for us the US, it would be part of our history. I agree that the reminising over what the land was like then would be enjoyable for the artisan and the client. I was just thinking on the physical level of what it would be like to actually work with a wood like that.1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
Ricks,
If you would really like to see what it's like, come here to Minnesota. We still have some trees that are original old growth stuff growing on the hills and back areas around here.
The corner timber in my home has 270 growth rings in it.. It was growing before the constitution was signed. I've got several like that!
Here in Oregon, we have old growth and they are impressive1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go 4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
