Well, I went to buy the 6″ Yorkcraft jointer as reviewed in Shops and they are out until March. My choice seems to be buying the Delta 6″ which sells for $509 from Amazon or possibly stepping up to the 8″ Yorkcraft which has a 110/220 1 1/2 hp motor and sells for $649 plus $97 to ship it to me.
Now I need my good friends here to talk me into it (or out of it) and to make a sensible decision. Does anyone have advice on an 8″ machine? I see Delta at $1070 and others even higher (can’t go this high). I really don’t want to wait until March for my jointer as I have some good workshop time and I want to take advantage of it, but the Yorkcraft 6″ at $299 is a pretty hot deal.

I just bought and recieved a Grizzly 1018HW 8" jointer. I haven't assembled the thing yet. Just have managed to get the thing in the garage. It is extremely heavy.
I shopped and researched this very hard. I thought seriously about the Sunhill, But the Grizzly was $133 cheaper. I also thought about buying a 6" model, but decided that in 2 years or less, I would want an 8".
Overall, I am pleased so far with the machine. That isn't saying much seeing how it is not yet running. But it looks and feels like a piece of quality equipment. This is my first Grizzly machine. Once you get used to the Hammerite finish, it's OK.
I bet I've run over 20,000 bd.ft over my Grizzley 8 inch jointer. It's worked so well that since then I've bought a 20 inch planner and a 12 in tablesaw plus a bunch of other stuff....
Damn fine tool and a great company! (I love it's modest price too)
Rich,
This is a blessing in disguise. Very few in here are satisfied with their 6" model and wish they had bought an 8". It makes sense from the standpoint that rough boards are often 7-7.5" wide.
I bought the Sunhill 8" last month after a good deal of comparison shopping. Almost went with the Grizzly, opted for larger motor, and longer bed. I'm very happy with it so far. The shipping is a killer but the Grizzly shipping, at least to the northeast, is very reasonable. You are so close to a 8" I'd go for it. The "knock offs" IMHO are so scrutinized on this and other forums that you can buy with a good deal of confidence that you will be pleased with the machine and more importantly with the customer service.
