I’m building bookcases that when completed will stand 9 feet tall. I’m using 3/4″ cherry to build the carcasses. Plywood will go 8 ft. and for the additional 1 foot I plan on building a separate box and place it on top of the 8 footer. Should that box attach to the top of the 8 ft. box using brackets or screw the bottom of the 1 footer to the top of the 8 footer, then screw the whole thing to the wall. I’ll be building 7 of these cases. Thanks for your help.

call up your plywood supplier, you should be able to buy 10' long sheets which will make construction a lot easier.
*Thanks Andrew. I foolishly didn't think of that. So I went ahead and have 5 of them already built, the 8 footers. I figure lots of molding and screwing them to the wall and/or ceiling will secure them. Also the molding will hide the joinery of the two boxes.Lar
*Larry,As an alternative, you could make the 1 foot boxes and leave out the bottom piece. Then dado the tops of the 8 foot boxes or use biscuits and glue the small box on top. That will give you a 3/4" joint to cover instead of a 1 1/2" joint.Good luck,Mark
*Mark,Good idea, that is what I'm going to do. Thanks,Larry
*Wont you need about 6" at the top and bottom any way? I dont set the case on the floor I leavei it up 5-7" and the top is always shy of the ceiling by at least 4". The face frame looks nicer this way. Just a thought, maybe I don't follow your post right.
*P Pardis,Thanks for the information. I already built them using a separate box at the top. Your idea is a good one. I used the 8 ft. plywood strips to start at the floor. My bottom shelve is 4" from the floor and I attach a 1x5 face board that has it's top routed from the floor to the shelves front edge.
