This is a heads-up for Knots readers and posters. I received an e-mail yesterday from a person representing himself as being from FW magazine and Taunton Press, The name given was Tom McKenna. He was asking for some personal data so that one of my posts could be used in the Q&A of the magazine.
Mr. McKenna, I apologize if you are legitimate, but both of your e-mails contained worms that were intercepted by my security. I would appreciate someone from Taunton verifying his credentials.
In the meantime, my friends, use caution is answering e-mails from unknown sources and be careful of the information that you include in forum personal profiles.

I received a similar email from Tom. It had no worms.

What sort of "personal data" did he ask for?

Get a Mac, and never worry about computer viruses again.
Except for MAC viruses, that is. ;)
That's the old days. MacOS X is built on top of a UNIX core. (BSD UNIX.) No more viruses.geoff

Not yet, anyway. It's not a very attractive target, because hardly anyone is using it, but hey this whole iPod thing may help pull up Apple's market share. Unix OS's are harder to infect (Windows would be too, if you had to enter an adminstrator's password everytime you wanted to install new software), but it's not impossible.
<Except for MAC viruses, that is. ;)>yeah.....all 20 of em...and ten of those are in Microsoft programs.
not trying to start a Mac/PC war here but I know I have been saved from the turmoil of of viruses and worms running thru my email family and friends. As a designer/craftsman, I rely on my healthy hard drive and in 9 years have had only 2 occaisions to experience the joyful commonality of the shared computer virus. They are like an STD without the fun memory of how you got it. ;-) aloha, mike
I have a Mac; and the more I hear about the havoc these viruses can cause, I'm not sure why more people don't run them -- at least for personal use.********************************************************

There are other advantages beyond the virus issue, too. There are some disadvantages, too, but as far as I can tell, they all have to do with marketshare, and not design/function.A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher
a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts,
build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders,
cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure,
program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
Specialization is for insects.

Tom McKenna is a FW editor. I'm sending him a link to this post so he can respond.

Hello all, I am Tom McKenna, and I really am an associate editor of Fine Woodworking magazine. I also compile the magazine's Q&A department, and I visit Knots to look for questions I think are suitable for possible use in the magazine. I have contacted a number of Knots contributors over the past few months without worms or other problems, so please, do not fear me.
Ah, Mr McKenna,Just the person I wanted to reach. I posted in another thread wondering when the 2006 edition of the Tool Guide would be available in stores. Perhaps you can give me a date. Thanks,Cheers,Peter
You should see it near the end of this month.
Seems perhaps your security program misidentified the supposed worms?

It seems that a false alarm was the result. Sometimes multiple e-mails from a new source are viewed as a threat by firewall programs, thus the warning. I was a little spooked by someone asking my home address, etc.
Personal to Forest Girl: I read your posts frequently. I think you contribute much to this forum.
Thanks for the compliment! Keep sysop's email addy in your files -- it'll come in handy. (Sorry, Mark :-)forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>)
