I catch for the Bay Area MABL (Men’s Adult Baseball League, www.bamsbl.com) Red Sox, and have gotten a lot of interest from my teammates in learning to hit with Maple and Ash bats. Only trouble is, I don’t yet own a lathe.
I saw the great article an issue or two ago about midi lathes, and am curious about how folks have fared with these and similar models. Do you like them, hate them, have no opinion?
Also, does anyone know how to cup the end of a bat? Is there a trick, or is it just a matter of getting in there and scooping the end out, leaving just enough of a spindle for the bat to turn on, and then cutting/scraping that out?
Thanks for the tips!

Rob,
I don't know about forming the cup on the end, but I can't see where making a bat on a midi-lathe would be a problem. (Santa brought me a Delta last Christmas and I really like it.)
For a good bat, I'd think one should split out a billet with a froe or an axe for less likelihood of breaking it when you're up at the plate and ready to knock one over the fence.
