A finishing question. I’m trying to give an aged look to some brass hardware, specifically the desireable brown patina. I’ve read that vinegar will tarnish it green and a sulfurous solution will tarnish it brown. Does anyone know if this is true? If it is, what is a “sulfurous solution” and where do you get it. Thanks, John

John,
Sulfur for patinas are available as liquid and solid and tends to make a more blackish/brownish finish than a verdigris finish. You can purchase patina supplies from most jewelry and metalworking speciality catalogs, such as Rio Grande in New Mexico. Also, I suggest Tim McCreight's The Complete Metalsmith for application techniques and just about anything else you might want to know about working with non-ferrous metals.
Best,
Seth
I also think some craft shops carry things to tarnish brass. Might be more accessible than a catalog.
John
There is a product shown in April American Woodworker called Brass Ager from Phyllis Kennedy Hardware (800) 621-1245 or http://www.kennedyhardware.com.
Hope this helps
