When I built my bench 38 years ago as a neophyte woodworker I wanted a rigid tail vise which did not rack. Over the years people have asked me about it’s design, so I figured I would post it here.
I saw something similar and modified it for my use. I purchased a quality vise screw and had the rest of the pieces fabricated from my design by a local machine shop. I drew it up pre-computer days and have since lost the paper, so I redid the drawing.
The sliding bracket on stationary rods is not original to me, but I have not been able to find the reference I used, or even other examples. I admit is it a “little” over engineered, but I was just starting out and it has worked well all these years. It continues to rack very little over the 24 inches (0.06 inches) and operates smoothly after 38 years.

Thanks for sharing. There is something to be said for 38 years in use and still solid.
