I hope I not too far off base by asking this question in this forum but I thought I would begin here at least.
The roof on my house has suffered some extensive damage (though no leaks yet) from some strong wind storms we have had over the last six weeks or so. The damage is limited to two sides (south and west) because that it the prevailing direction of winds we get here, the other two sides have no damage at all. I should also say the roof is 11 years old. I’m hoping I can hold off until April of May to replace the roof, which presently is 3 tab composite shingles.
I have talked to a couple of contractors (friends) about what kind of repairs to make. It seems I have (at least) three choices; replace just damaged half with same roofing, replace whole roof with same roofing, replace with “architectual” composite roofing (not sure I understand exactly what that is but was told it was about 15% more expensive), put on metal roofing (one says to take off all of the old roofing, the other says it could be put on over old roofing).
I guess that more than three, but anyway I’m wondering what thoughts people who have better knowledge or more experience than I might have about this. All opinions appreciated.

Go to Breaktime. That's the house repair/building forum.
Thanks, sorry for the mistake.Norm (never been on TV)
Could someone tell me how I get to Home Repairs/Building Forum? I don't see it listed on Forums on the left side of the page.Norm (never been on TV)
At the very top-right of the orange header it says "Other forums" and "Breaktime".Good LuckFrostySorry for your problems.
The UL listing , assuming you can get it & pass is gonna cost over 20 grand easy. Now I'm not certain all policies forbid non UL stuff , but if it's determined that that caused a fire then your insurers' lawyers are going to have a field day trying to wiggle out of paying desite what the policy says.
Norm, I'd hesitate about the metal roofing, unless it's incredibly well insulated. Noisy, Noisy, noisy. My family's done a couple of roofs in the last 5 years or so. If you have more than a couple layers of roofing on there, it's probably a good idea to rip it all off before putting on new. It really gets unwieldy when there's 3, 4, 5 layers!
Good luck at Breaktime. Those guys know their stuff, so you should get some good info. Was it the Dec. 14th storm that got you?
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
You can coat your roof with EPDM Liquid Rubber Coating. EPDM Liquid Rubber can restore an old roof at a fraction of the cost of roof replacement. However, it all depends on the level of damage done to the roof. If the damage is extensive, the roof will need replacing and if it just needs some repairs or re-coating then Liquid Rubber is your best solution.
Metal is not noisy if it’s done right. Plywood underpayment, with 1x purlins to create a space gap.
I’ve seen metal out over shingles, in fact my house was don’t that way. Even though is supposedly wrong, 12yrs in a never an issue. I figure I have 2 roofs up there.
The drawback for me on metal is plan on having it repainted every 5-7 years depending on your climate. It will oxidize and start to fade.
In my area (hurricane zone) we get a break on insurance for metal.
I worked as a roofer's helper in college many moons ago. There's nothing wrong with replacing half a roof. You should be able to get another 10 years out of the old half of the roof, especially if it's not the side most exposed to wind and rain. I wouldn't do anything besides conventional shingles unless your roof is flat or nearly so -- that's where a membrane roof would shine. I don't see any advantage to metal roofing.
This thread is from 2007.
Thanks for the information. I think better advice, can give a roofing company because they know their work and their answers can be more valuable than ours 100. I can advise you to call https://city2surfroofing.com.au/metal-roofing-sydney/ , they are specialized in this domain. I had to deal with them some months ago, they made an inspection of my house's roof and gave me a good report, there was so detailed, where are the problems and what I had to change. I was impressed by their work.
Got to love zombie treads, uh the other half needs to be replaced now.
