I am turning two ball feet which will be mounted under a flat bracketed foot on a sideboard built in a period style. The material is cherry. The ball portion is 4.24 in diameter, and 3.25 in height. The bottom of the ball sits on the floor; the top has about 1.5 in. of detail at a diameter of 1.625, +/-, plus 1.25 in. of 1.125 diameter stock for mounting in the flat bracket. The question is — will it be easier/better to turn with the bottom of the ball oriented towards the headstock or the tailstock of the lathe? I am not the most experienced turner, and so will appreciate a bit of guidance. Thanks.

It depends in part on whether you are holding them in a chuck or between centers. A chuck would be best, with the tenon toward the chuck. Then you can fully turn the bottom of the foot and sand it on the lathe, then just part it off.
