The tree felling business down the road gives all there wood away for free,
they have a lot of Acacia, some of the piece are beautiful.

We use acacia all the time in Hawaii. It is a favored wood here-acacia koa-awesome stuff. mike
Any tips on working with it, finishing it?ThanksSalvaged
With Australian Blackwood (Acacia molonoxn) or somthing like that, it is a bear to work wtih. It's has a really long grain, and is prone to chip out. You have to always work with the grai, rout downhill all the time. because when it chips out it really chips out. hugh chunks come off. But once you learn how to work with it, it is abosolutly beautiful. I only use hand rubbed oil finishes and they work great of it.Kaleo

Start something with it and learn its properties. You will become an expert in no time with it. aloha, mike
Which Acacia is it? There are many-one is Australian Blackwood, I think. The one I know is the familiar "thorn tree" of Africa- the flat topped one that has thorns-the wood is white soft and no good for furniture but makes good spoons etc.
Where are the pictures of this one you talk of?
I will try to post some pictures later today. I am not sure which although I tried the
finger nail test, did not put a scratch in it.Salvaged
Black acacia is highly prized among the instructors and advanced students at school. It is a little challenging to work with, but the results can be absolutely gorgeous.

Oakland CA, after digging throught the pile of Acacia most was not worth the time. The rest was to large for me to handle.I took one small piece, maybe for a box.Salvaged
Salvaged:Where in Oakland? i'm here too and have always wanted to try working with black acacia.
The name of the tree felling business is Ponderosa tree service and they give
preference to people who can take would be the truck load. They take requests although
I'm sure they charge for that. There open lot is located at Wood St directly under West Grand just past Mandela Park Way check it out you might find something, it disappears pretty fast.Salvaged
Salvaged,
Thanks, but that's a little far to drive from central Kentucky at better than $3/gallon!
Post a pic when you're done.
