I’m looking for an action toy such as a marble chutes or small cars that run down ramps until they get to the bottom of the toy. Any ideas or sources?

The toy store? Sorry couldn't resist. I assume you're looking for plans. I know at Barnes and Noble I've seen 2 or 3 different books on making toys for children. If you don't have a B&N locally, you could visit Amazon and see if there are some books that you can "look inside" with that special feature they have.

Good suggestion on the toy store! Will visit the local Toys 'R Us and surreptitiously take dimensions off a prototype of what I would like to make. Thanks a bunch!
We have 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, so I am hard pressed to find new ideas - for the great grandchildren, anyway. The grandkids have all outgrown wooden toys.
There is a cool looking marble toy in the movie.... Witness ....with Kelly Mcgillis and Harrison Ford.....Fords character makes the toy for her little boy, while he's hiding out on her Amish farm
Have seen "Witness" several times but never noticed the toy. Guess I'll have to rent it again! Thanks for the tip.
OK

No, there are a couple other things in that movie that draw the eye. There were wooden toys?My goal is for my work to outlast me. Expect my joinery to get simpler as time goes by.
hahahahaaa
Transforming toys, I knew there was a book. click here. I have no children, but managed to finagle a grandson via marriage. He's 8 yrs. and just loves anything that transforms!

I'll bet you can find scads of stuff "out there" maybe so much it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff?

Thanks for all the help. I see your name so frequently on this site that you must be a mainstay for most! Anyway, my grandchildren and great grandchildren thank you!
"you must be a mainstay for most!" I enjoy the searching effort, it's fun. Knots is a great community.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FWW published an article in Issue 75 (Mar/Apr 1989) - Making Marble Rolls by Richard Starr.
