A friend of mine applied some 3M pressure sensitive adhesive backed veneer to a bathroom cabinet. The substrate is press board covered with contact paper (plastic). After application, he applied a water based finish coat. The finish is Aqua Zar Water based Polyurethane (Interior Satin).
First off, I would never have applied veneer over contact paper, or even press board for that matter! Since application of the above, the veneer has bubbled in numerous places. He is wondering what is the best approach to repair.
I suggested that he slice the bubbles but am not sure what has caused it to bubble in the first place, I suspect it could be the water based finish.
Any suggestions?

Bath cabinets are subject to unusually high humidity, and it's not the place I'd experiment with new techniques/materials. Rather, a tried and true approach of traditional veneering would be my choice. That said, the water based finish should still hold up well when applied right.
