Most folks use acrylic solvent cement. It is very fluid -- almost like water. It joins by momentarily dissolving the surfaces of the acrylic, letting them flow together, and then curing in position. You align the pieces to be joined (generally with masking tape or the like) and put a few drops of the cement at the joint. From surface tension it instantly flows along the joint. Wait a few minutes and you're done.
The one caution is that you don't want the cement to touch the tape. If it does touch the tape it will flow along the edges of the tape and mar the finished surface.
You can buy solvent cement at places that retail acrylic sheet. An on-line source is Tap Plastics (http://www.tapplastics.com).
Jamie, thanks loads for the product description, source and "how-to". Great info.
