I’ve made due with trusty 6″ Jet. Now it’s time for a jointer I want!
What I’m wondering is if it’s worth it to consider one of the combination jointer/planers. I’ve had my sights set on a Delta DJ20 for some time. I was in love with the Powermatic 60 but have read disappointing comments (perhaps it has to do with the 60A model…not made in America/quality?).
I’ve done all the kitchen cabinets in my home and built a custom large hutch. I would like the flexibility of an 8″ or larger jointer. While I’m at it, I wouldn’t mind a bigger planer than my Dewalt benchtop (DW733). Both machines have served me well but there’s been a few times I wish I had more cut available/longer tables.
It would better match my Powermatic 66, two router tables etc.
Any thoughts? experience?

I have never owned a jointer, and want one badly. But I do read that one can build outfeed tables for tools. Every time I look at what is for sale I mentally add tables at both ends. And I would invite comment by anyone with more experience!

I have a MiniMax FS 350 jointer/planer combo. It's extremely well built and would probably satisfy your desire for a longer bed, with its 6' table. I have the combo because my present shop is only about 300 sq. ft., and I need to conserve as much space as possible, but I am very pleased with the sturdiness of the machine and the excellent results it gives me. The need to change over from one mode to the other takes little time, and I've gotten used to it. Having the 13 3/4" capability on the jointer width is nice, too. Having separate machines is a nice option, but not one that I can use, unfortunately, and if you've looked at the cost of stand alone jointers in the 14" - 16" range, the cost of the combo machines is downright reasonable.
delta DJ20 is very nice sturdy machine. My grandfather had a rockwell 4" jointer. pain is the as* then my uncle bought the Delta. 8" is a complete difference. But if your shop has limited space look in to the combo machines. I have been looking at the Rejik (sp?) it has 12" jointer and planer. cost is about $2000.00 so it would be the same price as two sepreat machines.
